Event Info

  • On Saturday June 4th, 2016, Jessica Reid, our Co-Founder and Executive Director of Programming & Research will embark on a ten-day, 400 km walking marathon from Ryerson University in Toronto to Parliament Hill in Ottawa. The goals of Feet for FEAT are to increase awareness on the need to support children affected by parental incarceration in Canada and raise funds to support FEAT’s Family Visitation Program which provides vital support and helps children maintain healthy relationships with their imprisoned parents. Our programs have shown to increase children’s self-esteem, improve mental health and reduce the devastating cycle for the innocent children and families left behind.

  • On the opening day of the walk – our children, families and teams of supporters in our community will join Jessica in walking the first 5 kilometers in downtown Toronto and taking a step for each child across this country who is forced to face the devastating effects of parental incarceration. Together, we are taking steps to:
    •  Support all children who are left behind
    •  End the stigma
    •  Break the cycle

  • Jessica will walk an average of 40 kilometers a day on her trek to Ottawa. Each day, there will be a new team of supporters who will walk a mile for children of imprisoned parents. From previously incarcerated parents to FEAT mentors, community leaders and adults who were affected as children --- each will show their support for the children left behind.

  • Take the Mile Challenge to be apart of the journey and help create an international awareness on the need to support children of incarcerated parents in your community and on social media. #FEATMileChallenge #FeetforFEAT

  • 100% of the funds raised will help FEAT purchase a new bus and provide supportive programs to optimize the outcomes of children affected by parental incarceration.

The Need

  • Each year, over 375 000 children in Canada are affected by parental incarceration.

  • Despite the growing number of children affected by parental incarceration, the resources available for these forgotten children are nearly non-existent. Without support, children of incarcerated parents have an elevated risk of suffering from mental health issues, dropping out of school and becoming in conflict with the law.

  • Fostering, Empowering, Advocating, Together, (FEAT) for Children is the only organization in Canada developed to provide supportive programming tailored to the unique needs of children affected by parental incarceration. Currently, FEAT supports over 500 families in Ontario through the provision of vital programming.

FEAT’s Bus – A Vital Component to Supporting our Kids

  • FEAT’s bus is integral to supporting children and youth through our After School Program, Peer Mentorship Project and Empowerment Retreats.

  • Every weekend, our bus travels with children and their caregivers from Toronto to Federal and Provincial correctional institutions in Southern Ontario to enable family visits.

  • In 2014, our bus had to be replaced. With the support of our sponsors and donors, we were able to lease a 2012, 25-passenger bus.

  • However, FEAT still need to raise $20,000 to purchase the bus outright. 100% of the funds raised will go directly towards paying the remaining balance of the bus as well as food and program supplies to enable the sustainability of our supportive services.

Walking to Make a Difference

  • On Saturday June 4th, 2016, the founder of FEAT for Children, Jessica Reid will embark on a 10 day, 400 km walking marathon from Ryerson University in Toronto to arrive at Parliament Hill in Ottawa on June 13th.

  • Jessica will walk an average of 40 kilometers a day with a goal to increase the awareness of children affected by parental incarceration in Canada and raise funds to purchase our new bus outright.

  • To increase the magnitude of impact, members of the community, professionals, social service clubs, and corporations have been invited to register teams to take the mile challenge in support of the innocent children left behind.

The Mile Challenge

By taking the Mile Challenge, you are helping to increase awareness on the need to support children affected by parental incarceration across the world and reduce the stigma faced by these innocent victims. In Canada, 350 000 innocent children are separated by a parent in jail. While, 1 in 14 kids in the United States have a parent behind bars. Even in 2016, children of incarcerated parents are forced to face the trauma, shame and stigma – alone. The social isolation coupled with experiencing the devastating challenges of parental incarceration plagues children’s self-esteem and mental health, hinders academic achievement and often perpetuates the devastating cycles of abuse, violence and criminality. To be apart of the journey in making a difference, you will need to:

1. Walk a mile (2000 steps) and keep track of your steps with a step counter, watch or app (e.g., Health app on iPhone, Pedometre Free for Blackberry or WalkLogger Pedometer for Android users)

2. Take a selfie with your step counter, walking to make a difference or of your feet that took the mile challenge! Post your pictures on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter using the hashtag #FEATMileChallenge #FeetforFEAT2016 #Walkingtomakeadifference #JointheJourney

3. Nominate 5 friends to take the #FEATMileChallenge within 24 hours and join the journey to make a difference! If you are unable to complete the challenge within 24 hours, please donate $10 to help support vital programs for children affected by parental incarceration @ https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/feat-for-children/. FEAT is the only organization in Canada providing supportive programming for the innocent children left behind. Together we can help to build brighter futures.
